GERMOE
GERMOE is a township, parish and village, 6 miles north-west from Helston, and 8 from Penzance, in the Western division of the county, Kerrier Hundred, Helston Union, Kerrier deanery , Cornwall Archdeaconry, and Exeter bishopric; it is situated on the high road from Helston to Penzance. The church of St. Germoe is an old building, in the Perpendicular style of architecture; has a square embattled tower containing 3 bells, a porch (over which is a carved Crucifixion) a nave, aisles, chancel, two transepts, font, and chest containing registers from 1682; the pews are most irregular, each owner having adopted his own place; there are several mural monuments. In the churchyard is a sedilia, called the arm-chair of St Germoe; beneath is supposed to be a burial vault. The living is a curacy attached to Breage worth £100 yearly, with residence, in the gift of the Crown; the Rev. E. Morris PRIDMORE, M.A. is the incumbent, and the Rev. George Wintour, B.A., is the curate. There is a chapel for Wesleyans; a National school for boys and girls, endowed with £10 by the Duke of LEEDS; a Sunday school is held at the church. Pengersick Castle, at Sydney Cove, is an ancient and dilapidated building, and many legends are recorded of it; one of the old towers is still standing. There are several mines in this parish. The population, in 1851 was 970, and the acreage is 1,288. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is granite. The Duke of LEEDS, Hender MOLESWOTH ST-AUBYN, Esq., and S BULLER Esq., are lords of the manor and chief landowners. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips.
