About the Old Homeplace at Sanders Crossing , Grundy Co TN
The Old Sanders Family Home Place at Sanders Crossing in
Grundy County Tennessee
This is an image of the old Tennessee home of John R Sanders
(1834-1918) located at Sanders Crossing in Grundy County. John Russell
Sanders was the older brother to my gg grandfather Milton
Porter Sanders (1836-1911) of Pelham, Tennessee. Both
John and Milton Sanders were the sons of Thomas
Sanders Sr. orig of Jones Co NC (1790-1855) . Thomas Sr (as
well as his two sons mentioned here) were laid to rest at the
Clouse Hill Cemetery located near the old town of Coalmont in Grundy Co
TN.
According to legend, SANDERS CROSSING was named after my great
great grandftaher Confederate Soldier, Milton Porter Sanders of
Pelham, TN. This tidbit of lore was found in a 1956 yearbook for
Sanders School in Tracy City Tennessee. The school was named after the
community (Sanders Crossing) and the community after my ancestor. (
Milton Porter Sanders)
Porter was a sharpshooter for the famed TN "Pelham Gaurds" and
fought in the Battle at Fredricksburg as well as the battle @
Chancellorsville.
Later in July of 1863 , Milton was shot in the head
during the battle at Gettysburg and amazingly enough, lived to
tell about it. When asked to describe the precise
nature of his wounds while applying for a confederate pension in
1906, Milton's response was as follows:
"I was in the seven days at Richmond Va where I was shocked and
disabled from the explosion of a shell for some days. After
I was shot in the head at Gettysburg & there were several
pieces of my skull that was taken out. "
