Alma Develops Thyroid Cancer

The Sanders family had been living in Shreveport LA for nearly two years when Alma gave birth to their last child Paul Allen Sanders on 17 SEP 1952. Shortly after Pauls birth, Alma developed a goiter in her throat which quickly worsened to the point where she became incapacitated requiring immediate inpatient treatment at Oak Ridge Cancer Research Hospital in Tennessee. Alma's eldest son Eddie S Sanders shared his mothers medical history with me in 2004 though the specifics surrounding Alma's inpatient treatment was unknown.


I learned that the construction of this 30 bed cancer research facility had just recently been completed (in late 1950). Ironically, the first patient to be admitted there was a woman with extensive thyroid cancer in 1951. Thanks to the Freedom of Informaton Act, I found that my grandmothers records detailing her condition and treatment can be obtained through the U.S. Department of Energy (Oak Ridge Operations) Even though my request has been assigned a tracking number (#05-085), the FOIA officer is unable to retrieve the records without first obtaining Alma's social security number. Unfortunately, my attempts to track down my grandmothers SSN have been unsuccessful thus far and any assistance the reader may be willing to offer me at this point would be greatly appreciated.
